 Our Practice

PICSNJ has a longstanding history of providing excellent pulmonary and critical care management to the patients of the central Jersey region. Drs. Douglas Hutt, Andrea Harangozo and Philip Schiffman, who are also clinically oriented physicians on the full-time faculty of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, started the practice to deliver academic-standard pulmonary and critical care to our patients.

Dr. Douglas Hutt joined the Rutgers-RWJMS faculty in 1988, where he did basic research in sleep medicine and was Assistant Director of the MICU while on the full-time faculty. Dr. Douglas Hutt held a leadership position at the NJ Thoracic Society and established PICSNJ with Dr Schiffman in 1992.

Dr. Andrea Harangozo joined the Rutgers-RWJMS faculty in 1990 and did molecular biology research in pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary fibrosis during her full-time faculty tenure. She served as the first woman president of the medical staff of RWJUH for six years, until the end of 2014. Drs. Harangozo and Hutt continue to provide pulmonary management and evaluation for the Robert Wood Johnson Neuromuscular and ALS Center, which is the only ALSA-certified center in the state of New Jersey.

PICSNJ merged with Lincoln Pulmonary in 1995, and Dr. Donna Klitzman was recruited from the faculty of Case Western Reserve University in 1997. She specializes in COPD, Pulmonary Vascular Diseases and Lung Diseases associated with Connective Tissue Diseases.

The group grew further with the addition of Dr. Tricia Todisco Gilbert, a sleep specialist from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, in 2003. Her special interests include sleep disordered breathing, insomnia, narcolepsy, circadian rhythm disorders, exercise physiology, dive medicine and nutritional healing. She works closely with several of the area's sleep labs, including those at Robert Wood Johnson University and St. Peter's University hospitals, as well as Home Sleep, LLC, a provider of home sleep studies.

Dr. David Fischler, from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, has brought aggressive critical care and interventional pulmonary management to PICSNJ since joining the practice in 2004. He serves on a variety of hospital committees, helping to ensure the maintenance of quality pulmonary and critical care at RWJUH. In 2016, Dr. David Fischler became Associated Director of the RWJUH MICU and was instrumental in its reorganization.

Dr. Amina Saqib  brings her Masters in Public Health and  an interventional pulmonary expertise in EBUS and critical care ultrasonography to our practice.

We are happy to welcome Dr. Aref Daouk to our practice! He also has a Masters in Public Health and joins Dr Saqib in enlarging our interventional pulmonary team in bronchoscopic procedures including navigational bronchoscopies and endobronchial ultrasound-guided biopsies.

We work closely with our thoracic surgery colleagues and oncologists to provide the best and most timely care to our patients.  July 1, 2023, PICSNJ became part of the RWJ Barnabas Health team.
